Nettle

The Himalayan Giant Nettle (Girardinia diversifolia) is locally known as allo, and it has been used for centuries by communities throughout Nepal. The nettle we use in our collections is collected by Nepali villagers from community forests in a sustainable manner that preserves the natural ecology of the environment that it is sourced. Chemicals are shunned in favour of traditional bleaching, such as ash. The fibre is eventually hand-spun into fabric by the villagers.  Nettle plants grow abundantly in diverse climates without the need for pesticides or excessive water, making them a renewable resource. Nettle plants absorb carbon dioxide during growth, contributing to carbon sequestration and mitigating climate change.
