Bride Inspired by Audrey Hepburn Marries In Gold Bias-Cut Gown
Our real bride in focus today is the beautiful Maureen, who wed her lovely husband Clifford in September 2014 in a bespoke Sanyukta Shrestha gown. She is living proof that a coloured wedding dress can remain classic and elegant, and is perfect for bringing out a vibrant personality and making a gorgeous statement on your wedding day.
They married at the Hurlingham Club in Fulham– an impressive city centre country oasis, with romantic grounds and architecture that had an understated contemporary finesse.
Tell us about your husband and how he proposed
His name is Clifford Standen, we met in a pub in Surbiton, Surrey, where he was working there at the time.
We mutually decided to get engaged, but he still took me out as a surprise and presented me with a beautiful engagement ring that he had chosen himself. He knows I am an Art-Deco fan and bought a genuine Art-Deco ring with an Emerald cut diamond at the centre. He then formally asked me to marry him. This was at one of our favourite restaurants Colbert on Sloane Square in Chelsea.
What was your vision for the day?
We held a civil ceremony at the Hurlingham Club in Fulham. It’s a beautiful country paradise in the middle of London. The setting, the food and the service were not only faultless, but inspired. They provided everything that we had hoped for and we were blessed by a beautiful sunny and warm day in September.
For my dress the inspiration was Audrey Hepburn and Sanyukta translated this into a beautiful wedding gown. I wanted the flowers to appear wild to fit with the countryside feel of Hurlingham. We both wanted the day to be like a relaxed informal lunch party for friends and family.
The most magical moment of your day?
Saying “I do” to my husband in front of friends and family.
How did you know a Sanyukta Shrestha wedding dress was the one for you as a bride?
I was aware of her elegant boutique and the beautiful window displays but it was only after making an appointment and meeting her and her assistant where they immediately understood what I wanted and developed my idea with fabulous fabrics and trimmings.
“It looked and felt perfect. My confidence was reinforced by the amazing comments that I received, the most remembered being from an unlikely source- the driver that took me to the Hurlingham Club!”
Do you have any advice for brides-to-be on wedding dress shopping?
Mine was not a traditional wedding dress, but my advice is to have a very good concept in mind of the style and shape that will suit you, then take the designer’s advice on the best way to achieve what you want.
